How We Evaluate Products

Every recommendation on DetailCompare is built the same way: from evidence, transparently. Here is exactly what goes into our rankings, reviews, and comparisons — and what doesn't.

Our Data Sources

  • Verified owner reviews at scale. Our primary input is the aggregated experience of real buyers — we analyze rating distributions and review counts across thousands of verified purchases per product. A 4.6-star average across 50,000 owners tells you more than any single tester can. We display these review counts next to our ratings so you can weigh the evidence yourself.
  • Manufacturer specifications — formulations, sizes, concentrations, claimed durability — checked against what owners actually report.
  • Detailing community consensus. Products earn long-term reputations among professional detailers and enthusiasts. When the pro community consistently stocks a product, that signal carries weight in our rankings.
  • Daily price tracking. Our systems check current Amazon pricing every day, which powers the price tiers shown across the site.

How Rankings Are Decided

For each buying guide we shortlist the most-purchased products in a category, then rank on four factors: owner satisfaction (rating weighted by review volume), fitness for purpose (a budget pick and a professional pick are judged against different expectations), value per use, and manufacturer track record. Every pick must justify a specific label — “best overall,” “best budget,” “best for beginners” — or it doesn't make the list.

What We Don't Do

  • No pay-for-placement. Brands cannot buy a spot in our guides, and no ranking has ever been influenced by commission rates.
  • No fabricated hands-on claims. Where we describe a product's behavior, it reflects documented owner experience and specifications — not staged testing theater.
  • No stale recommendations. Product data refreshes automatically every day, and guides are revisited when a category's lineup meaningfully changes.

How We Make Money

DetailCompare is reader-supported. When you buy through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission from Amazon or the brand — at no extra cost to you. Commissions never affect rankings: our recommendations are the same ones we'd give a friend standing in the garage asking “which one should I buy?”
