Chemical Guys VSS One-Step Review: The Kit Polish That Holds Its Own

A competent one-step that corrects light-to-moderate swirls and finishes clean in a single pass, silicone-free enough to coat over. It is the polish bundled with the TORQX kit for a reason. It costs more per ounce than the Meguiar's and Griot's alternatives and won't fix deep defects, but for a weekend one-stepper it does the job.
VSS stands for Scratch & Swirl Remover, and the honest description is a medium-cut polish that finishes well. Most people meet it inside the TORQX 9-piece kit, where it is the default abrasive, and most of them get a full car's worth of visible swirl removal out of it on their first attempt. That is the product's real achievement: it makes a beginner's first one-step correction look like it worked, because it did.
How it corrects
Diminishing abrasives start with roughly the bite of a light compound and break down into a polish. On a medium cutting pad at speed five it removes wash-induced swirls, light oxidation and water spots; on a polishing pad at speed four it finishes down cleanly enough to coat. Deep scratches and heavy oxidation are beyond it — that's M105 territory — but that is true of every one-step.
Working time is long, which is the reason it suits beginners: you can make six or eight passes on a section before it dries and it keeps working the whole time. Apply it sparingly. The common mistake is too much product, which makes wipe-off gummy and leaves an oily film that IPA has to remove.
Coating prep
VSS is silicone-free and body-shop safe, so unlike glaze-style polishes it does not leave oils that fight a ceramic coating. A quick panel-wipe afterward is still good practice, but owners routinely coat straight over it with Adam's Graphene without bonding problems.
Where it stops
Price. Sixteen ounces costs noticeably more than Griot's Complete Compound or Meguiar's Ultimate Compound, and neither of those is worse. If you already have the kit, use it happily. If you're buying a stand-alone one-step, compare it against the alternatives in our polish and compound guide first.
