Our Verdict
The durability benchmark every other wax gets measured against. Four to six months of protection from a thin coat, a warm carnauba look, and a bottle that lasts years, for the price of a car wash. It gels in the cold and punishes thick application, and neither has stopped it being the best value in paint protection for decades.
Collinite 845 was formulated to keep high-voltage insulators clean in weather, and that origin explains everything about it. It is not a boutique wax. It is a carnauba-polymer hybrid whose only design goal was to stay put, and eighty years later it still outlasts products that cost three times as much. Detailers who have tried everything keep a bottle of 845 in the cabinet for winter, and that is the highest compliment the category has.
Durability
A single thin coat beads water through four to six months of real weather — road salt, summer sun, winter slush. Two coats a day apart stretch it further. That is sealant-class durability from something that looks like a wax: the gloss is warmer and deeper than a synthetic polymer sealant like Meguiar's Ultimate Liquid Wax, closer to a carnauba, without the carnauba's habit of vanishing after three washes.
Application, and the two rules
Rule one: thin. 845 is a liquid, but a thick coat cures into a film that fights you at wipe-off and leaves streaks. A few drops on a foam applicator covers a whole door. Rule two: warm. Below about 60°F the bottle turns to a gel; a few minutes in warm water fixes it. Follow both rules and it goes on and comes off as easily as anything here. Ignore them and you will conclude, as many first-time users do, that it is a nightmare.
It is safe on paint, glass, chrome and gelcoat, which is why it's as common on boats as on cars. Keep it off matte black trim; like most carnaubas it can leave a faint white residue on unpainted plastic.
What it is not
A show wax. The gloss is honest but not the deep, wet look of Butter Wet Wax, and it has no scent, no color and packaging from a different era. It is also not a coating: a ceramic like Adam's Graphene lasts longer still. 845 wins the middle: more protection than any wax, less fuss than any coating.
