Koch-Chemie Pol Star Review: One Neutral Cleaner for Fabric, Leather and Alcantara

4.6

Our Verdict

Pol Star is a pH 7 concentrate that cleans fabric, carpet, leather and Alcantara with a fine foam, diluted 1:5 to 1:20. Koch-Chemie says it leaves no water marks and preserves factory waterproofing. You supply the bottle and the mixing, and heavy stains may need something stronger. As a single safe cleaner for every soft surface in a car, it is hard to fault.

Soft interior surfaces usually mean three bottles: a fabric cleaner, a leather cleaner and something gentle enough for Alcantara. Koch-Chemie Pol Star is the German professional brand's attempt to cover all three. Its data sheet lists a pH of 7 and describes a neutral cleaner with a protection formula for leather, Alcantara and textiles such as upholstery and carpet.

What you get

A one-liter bottle of concentrate. Koch-Chemie recommends diluting it between 1:5 and 1:20 depending on how dirty the surface is, so a single liter makes anywhere from six to twenty-one liters of working solution. The brand says the fine-pored foam lifts dirt out of the fibers, does not leave water marks and preserves the material's original waterproofing, and that a built-in conserver helps slow re-soiling. A five-liter size exists for shops.

How it's used

Mix it in a spray bottle or foaming pump, apply, and let it sit briefly. Koch-Chemie's instructions are to work it in carefully with a sponge or microfiber cloth in the direction of the fibers, then pick up the foam and residue with a damp cloth or a wet/dry vacuum. On Alcantara and leather, putting the foam on the cloth or a soft brush such as one from the Detail Factory ultra-soft set keeps the surface from getting soaked. It can also go through an extractor like the Bissell Little Green, though the manufacturer recommends adding a defoaming agent for that.

Where it falls short

You have to do the mixing, and the bottle does not come with a sprayer. A neutral cleaner is gentle by design, so old set-in stains on carpet may still call for a dedicated spot remover. Koch-Chemie also tells you to check color fastness and material compatibility before use, which is worth doing on dyed or aged leather. Availability is thinner than mainstream brands, mostly through detailing suppliers.
