Meguiar's Gold Class Carnauba Plus Review: The Wax on Every Shelf

Gold Class is the wax most people's first car got, and it hasn't changed much because it didn't need to. A blend of carnauba for gloss and polymers for a little durability, it goes on easily, comes off easily and makes a dark car look noticeably deeper for a few weeks. It is not a durable product, and it doesn't pretend to be. It's the wax you use because you enjoy waxing.

The look

This is where Gold Class earns its keep. Carnauba gives dark paint a warmth and wet depth that synthetic sealants like Ultimate Liquid Wax never quite match, and Gold Class has enough of it to show. On black, deep red and dark blue, a freshly applied coat is a visible upgrade. On silver and white the difference is smaller, and a sealant's longer life makes more sense.

Application

It comes with a decent foam applicator. Work it thin in the shade — in direct sun it hazes and gets stubborn — let it dry to a haze and buff off with a plush microfiber. It is more forgiving of thick application than Collinite 845, which makes it a good learning wax. Tape or avoid unpainted black trim: it leaves the classic white carnauba stain that takes a dedicated cleaner to remove.

Durability

Four to six weeks of noticeable beading on a daily driver, longer in a garage. After that the gloss fades and the water sheets rather than beads. If you wax monthly anyway that's fine; if you want to wax twice a year, this is the wrong product.

Owners of dark cars who enjoy the ritual, anyone on a tight budget, and anyone who wants a carnauba look with the lowest possible risk of doing it wrong.
