Meguiar's Whole Car Air Re-Fresher Review: A One-Shot Fogger for the Whole Cabin
Our Verdict
This single-use aerosol fogs the whole cabin and ventilation system in about 15 minutes with the fan on recirculate, then needs a short airing out. Meguiar's says it bonds to odor molecules and leaves a New Car scent for weeks. It cleans nothing, the fragrance is strong, and smells return if the source remains. Use it as the last step, not the first.
Sprays treat the spot you aim at. Meguiar's Whole Car Air Re-Fresher is designed for smells you cannot aim at: the ones in the headliner, under the seats and inside the ventilation system. It is a small aerosol can with a locking trigger that empties itself into a closed car while the fan circulates the mist everywhere air goes.
What you get
A single-use 2-ounce can. Meguiar's says its odor-eliminating technology removes bad odors through chemical bonding at a molecular level instead of simply covering them, and then leaves a New Car scent that the company says lasts for weeks. The same product is sold in other scents, including Sweet Summer Breeze, Fiji Sunset and Black Chrome.
How it's used
Meguiar's directions begin with cleanup: remove the source of the odor, then vacuum and clean any soiled carpet or upholstery. Park in the shade in a well-ventilated spot. The car must be unoccupied, with no people, pets or plants inside. Start the engine, set the fan on high with cold, recirculated air and close the windows. Point the nozzle away from you, lock the trigger, set the can on the floor in the center of the car and shut the doors for 15 minutes. Then open all the doors, switch the car off and let it air out for 5 to 10 minutes.
Where it falls short
One can is one treatment, with nothing left over for a second pass. The scent is strong at first, and if you dislike it you will be living with it for a while, so this is a poor fit for fragrance-sensitive drivers; an unscented spot treatment like Gyeon OdorRemover suits them better. Most important, it does not clean anything. Spilled milk in the carpet pad or a damp, moldy cabin filter will bring the smell back. Deal with the source first, using something like Chemical Guys Foaming Citrus Fabric Clean on the upholstery.
