Nexgen Ceramic Spray Review: High SiO2 Content at a Premium

4.2

Our Verdict

A spray sealant that Nexgen says contains 13 percent SiO2 and lasts up to 12 months, applied by spraying, spreading and buffing a panel at a time in the shade. It's simple and concentrated. It also costs more than mainstream sprays carrying similar manufacturer ratings, and it needs careful buffing. A capable product whose price is the main reason to hesitate.

Most ceramic sprays are vague about how much ceramic is in the bottle. Nexgen made the number its selling point: the company states that Nexgen Ceramic Spray contains 13 percent SiO2, a high figure for a spray-and-wipe product, and claims up to 12 months of protection from an application. That places it between a ceramic detail spray and a true bottle coating.

What you get

A trigger bottle of spray sealant for paint, vinyl, plastics, rubber and other hard, non-porous exterior surfaces. There is no kit: you need to bring your own microfiber towels, ideally one to spread and a second, dry one to buff. Because each panel takes only a light mist, a bottle goes a long way.

Application

The process is the familiar one. Start with a washed, dry and preferably clayed car. Spray a panel, spread the product evenly with a microfiber towel, then buff to a uniform finish. Nexgen's directions say not to apply it in direct sunlight and not to let it dry by itself on the surface, so work a panel at a time in the shade and keep the towel moving. As with any sealant, the cleaner and smoother the paint, the longer it lasts; our beginner's detailing guide covers the wash and decontamination steps.

Where it falls short

Value is the sticking point. Nexgen costs more than mainstream rivals with similar manufacturer ratings, notably Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions Ceramic Spray Coating, and a higher SiO2 percentage on the label does not automatically translate into longer life on the road. The 12-month figure is the manufacturer's upper limit, with real results depending on prep, climate and washing habits. A concentrated formula is also less forgiving of heavy-handed spraying, so buff thoroughly and check dark paint from an angle.

Who it's for
