Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light Review: Pro-Grade Protection You Can Buy Yourself

4.7

Our Verdict

The consumer version of Gtechniq's professional coating, rated by the brand for up to five years and removable with a polisher if the install goes wrong. It demands an indoor space, careful immediate wipe-off and a bottle used within three months of opening, and nothing but the coating comes in the box. For experienced, patient owners it's the long-term pick.

Gtechniq's flagship coating, Crystal Serum Ultra, is sold only to accredited detailers, partly because a mistake with it has to be sanded off. Crystal Serum Light is the version anyone can buy. Gtechniq says it delivers 80 percent of Ultra's performance, and rates it for up to five years. The practical difference is the safety net: if it goes on badly, it can be machine polished away and reapplied.

What you get

A 30 ml bottle of a dense, chemically bonding ceramic coating aimed at gloss and chemical resistance more than showy water beading. That is why Gtechniq treats it as a base layer. After a minimum wait of an hour or so you can top it with C2 Liquid Crystal or the brand's dedicated hydrophobic top coat for slicker, tighter beading. Budget for the extras, because the bottle is the bottle: applicator pads, a stack of short-pile microfiber towels and a panel wipe are on you.

Application

Gtechniq's instructions are stricter than most consumer coatings. Work indoors, between about 41 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Wash, decontaminate and polish, then clean each panel with a panel wipe. Saturate the pad, spread the coating over a section of roughly two feet by two feet, and remove the residue immediately with one towel, then again with a second. There is no waiting for a flash. Inspect under a bright light before moving on, and keep the car indoors for 12 hours afterward. Our step-by-step coating guide covers the prep in detail.

Where it falls short

This is not the forgiving choice. A missed high spot cures hard, and the fix is a polisher. The indoor requirement rules out driveway installs. And the shelf life is short: Gtechniq says to use an opened bottle within three months and an unopened one within twelve, so buy it the week you plan to use it.

Who it's for
