Gyeon LeatherCleaner Strong Review: Deep Cleaning Before a Leather Coating

4.3

Our Verdict

LeatherCleaner Strong is a cleaner and nothing else: it strips heavy dirt, oil and discoloration from automotive leather and leaves a matte, residue-free surface ready for a coating. Gyeon says it is safe on modern and already-coated leather. It adds no protection of its own and is overkill for light upkeep, but for restoration and coating prep it does exactly one job well.

Gyeon sells its leather cleaner in two strengths, and this is the stronger one. Q²M LeatherCleaner Strong is not a weekly wipe-down product. Gyeon positions it for leather that is heavily soiled, shiny with body oil or showing dye transfer, and as the preparation step before one of its leather coatings goes on. The goal is a surface that is fully matte and free of residue, which is what clean automotive leather is supposed to look like.

What you get

A dedicated cleaner with no conditioners, oils or gloss agents in the mix. Gyeon says it is safe for modern automotive leather and works on coated leather without removing the coating. It is sold in 500 ml and 1000 ml bottles, and the brand estimates consumption at roughly 100 ml per vehicle, so even the smaller bottle covers several full interiors.

How it's used

Gyeon's method is to apply the cleaner to a leather brush or scrub pad rather than straight onto the seat, work it gently into the grain, and wipe the loosened dirt away with a microfiber towel. Stubborn areas such as bolsters and steering wheels can be repeated. A soft brush like the Detail Factory ProGrip suits the job, and applying product to the brush helps keep liquid out of perforations and stitching. Once the leather is dry and matte, Gyeon recommends following with a protective coating.

Where it falls short

This is one step of a system, and it leaves the leather bare. If you stop here you have clean seats with no added protection, so plan on a coating or a conditioner afterward. It is also more cleaner than lightly used leather needs; Gyeon itself describes it as a deep-cleaning product, not a daily one. And it costs more per ounce than the all-in-one sprays in auto-parts stores. For a quick monthly wipe, a one-step like the Meguiar's Gold Class spray is simpler.
