Gyeon Q² One EVO Review: The Single-Layer Coating for First-Timers

The usual objections to a real ceramic coating are that it takes multiple layers, a heated garage and nerves. Gyeon Q² One EVO was designed to remove all three. It's a single-layer SiO2 coating that Gyeon rates for up to 24 months or 25,000 km, which the company says is roughly 50 percent more durable than the original One, and it can be applied outdoors as long as you avoid direct sun and water while it cures.

What you get

A 30 ml bottle and a Gyeon coating applicator. Gyeon puts consumption at 25 to 30 ml per vehicle, so one bottle is one car with nothing to spare on a big SUV; larger bottles exist for those. The cured coating is rated for a pH range of 2 to 11, which covers ordinary shampoos and most wheel and iron cleaners used sensibly.

Application

Prep is the same as for any coating: wash, decontaminate with an iron remover such as Gyeon Iron, polish if the paint needs it, then wipe down with Gyeon Prep. The surface must be cool, oil-free and completely dry. One EVO is then spread a small section at a time and wiped off immediately. Where it falls short

The wipe-off window is short. Gyeon's guidance is to wipe within 10 to 30 seconds, so there's no coating half a hood and coming back to it; work in small sections with a spare towel in hand. The 24-month rating is also modest next to coatings like Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light, which is the price of an easy single layer.
