Lexol All Leather Conditioner Review: The Long-Running Step Two

4.4

Our Verdict

Lexol's conditioner is a thin, non-greasy liquid that uses fine oil droplets to keep finished leather soft and help prevent cracking. It goes on with a cloth, absorbs in minutes and wipes clean. It needs a separate cleaner first and makes no UV claims. As a low-cost, long-established maintenance conditioner for car seats and household leather, it remains an easy recommendation.

Lexol has been a default answer to "what do I put on leather seats?" for decades, in tack rooms as much as garages. Lexol All Leather Conditioner is the second half of the brand's two-step system: clean with the Lexol cleaner, then condition with this. It is a thin liquid, not a paste or a thick oil, which makes it quick to apply across a whole interior.

What you get

A 16.9-ounce (500 ml) bottle. Lexol says the formula nourishes leather with fine oil droplets that penetrate the pores to keep it soft and guard against cracking and premature aging, and that it leaves no greasy residue and contains no harmful silicones. The brand lists auto leather, furniture, footwear, handbags, sports gear and luggage as intended uses, so one bottle serves the whole house.

How it's used

Start with clean leather; conditioner applied over dirt just seals the dirt in. Lexol's directions are to shake the bottle, put the conditioner on a clean microfiber cloth or sponge applicator, and smooth it evenly into the leather. Let it absorb for a few minutes, then wipe off any excess with a clean cloth. Microfiber applicator pads make it easier to keep the coat thin and even. There is no long cure time, so the car is usable soon after.

Where it falls short

It is one step of two, so the true cost includes a cleaner. It adds no stated UV protection, which one-step sprays such as Meguiar's Gold Class Rich Leather do advertise. As a liquid conditioner it is meant for smooth, finished leather and not for suede, nubuck or Alcantara. And most modern car leather has a protective top coat that limits how much any conditioner can soak in, so expect a softer feel and a clean, low-sheen look, not a transformation of badly cracked seats.
